Sundernagar Dodhwan
SAKAR word is Hindi word whose meaning is fulfilment of dream . Sheetal Sharma while doing her special education from National Institute of Mental Handicapness Delhi saw this dream of opening special school at Sunder Nagar in 1996 and it came true in shape of SAKAR in 2008. Initially this special school was run in rent free accommodation provided by parents of Sheetal Sharma near Himachal Dental College with 3 students. In March ,2009 SSA Mandi sanctioned Home Based Project of10 children for SAKAR society and Sheetal Sharma suggested to bring these CWSNs to school daily in hired vehicle instead of visiting these children weekly at homes This idea made this school successful however expenditure was more than the grants received from SSA. Next year the strength of HBP increased to 20 by SSA & space fell short here so the school was shifted to village Dodhwan in February ,2011 where school building is constructed by Mahesh Sharma husband of Sheetal Sharma by raising house loan from PNB Sundernagar. This building has now two floors and it is leased to SAKAR @ Rs 1/- per annum. Strength of CWSNs has increased to 81 as per enrolment however around 60 CWSNs from surrounding areas of Sundernagar are brought in 4 vehicles from their door steps and dropped back after school hours.
Special education is imparted to these special children through special educators. Physiotherapy & Speech therapy facilities are also available at this centre. Vocational training through Vocational Instructors is provided to these Mentally Compromised children & their products are displayed & sold in SAKAR Special Shoppe near Cinema Hall Sunder Nagar.
